MBA: Not Just About Money
You learn from your mistakes. But in case of your career you can afford to make them especially if it’s a case of building it. People who say that you need to do an MBA usually say it because they see people with MBAs around them doing well.
An MBA degree isn’t just about getting a well paying job. You need to know what it means to you, how it adds value to your career. It makes a big difference, only if you can grasp the concept of it all. Why do companies hire MBAs? They want people who have the ability to see the big picture concerning the company. They want you to analyze where they stand, what they are can do, where they can get to because of you, how soon they can get there, why things do not happen the way they should, and what is to be done to make things happen. They want people who can lead the way.
If you think that jobs don’t throw you into this kind of a situation you are very wrong. This is exactly what happens in the real world. In the beginning the reason as to why you did an MBA might frustrate you because you won’t often find the need of having done it. Realizing it is a slow process. You need to be able to visualize the large scenario in small ones, and relate it to other scenarios and then think in the company’s point of view. You can really make a difference to your company once you realize this and then your job becomes fun and challenging. But that is what you would want from a job, isn’t it?
And MBA degree teaches you have a perspective. That doesn’t mean others might not have it. To be a good manager you don’t need a degree, but an MBA will just help you get closer to what you want. You ability to see the picture before others can is the very reason this degree is considered important. It isn’t about what you have, but how you show it to the world. It isn’t about numbers, just how you can make them work to your advantage. And it isn’t about selling things; you need to be able to sell yourself properly.
There may be a hundred reasons as to why you shouldn’t do an MBA. But if you do, you better know why you are doing it. So do it well. It holds true for anything in life. An MBA will give you a fatter paycheck. But you should know why you deserve it.
